In 2022 Knowle Farm decided it was time to home some sheep again, after over a decade of being 'sheep less'.
Herdwicks are renowned for being the hardiest breed of UK sheep, deriving from Cumbria. We like them particularly because of their smiling faces!
Being hardy, Herdwicks love foraging in harsh terrain, hills and brambles. Their fleece is thick and coarse and although they are large they are very mobile.
Ewes usually have 1-2 lambs, often dictated by the type of terrain they are on.
Lambs are born black but as they grow the heads and legs become completely white and the fleece turns brown and then grey, as most people imagine Herdwicks to look.
Herdwick Lamb
Herdwick lambs take longer to mature and develop, resulting in a much deeper flavour once they are Hogget at around eighteen months old.
We grow on all the lambs not intended for breeding flock as hogget so you can enjoy the wonderful deep flavour. We have Herdwick lamb, hogget and mutton meat boxes available at various times of the year so please contact us for more information.
